| | | 10th Hussars Collection of artefacts & 1914 Star and Bar Trio This is a stunning collection of artefacts all relating to one man's (George Wilson) service during the Great War. This is a real gem of a collection and really belongs in a Hussars regimental museum, however is offered here for a private collection.
Perhaps the most amazing artefacts in the collection is Wilson's silver wound badge and the mangled German Mauser bullet that wounded him! Wilson thankfully survived the war and retained the Mauser bullet as a souvernir. It is an amazing artefact and coupled with the wound badge it would be very rewarding for someone to research how, and in which battle he recieved his wound. Other artefacts here include two wound stripes both comple with the 3 loops at the back.
Wilson's 10th Hussars insignia, two badges (including his cap badge) aswell as his two shoulder title are also present.
Also present is Wilson's 1914 Star and (original) Bar trio. These are named as follows: 4698 L.CPL G. WILSON. 10/HRS. on the 1914 Star, and on the War and Victory medals: 4698 A.CPL. G. WILSON. 10-HRS. These medal on their own would be worth £180+ however as part of this collection they are priceless. All three are in good condition with no edge knocks or significant scratches.
Most interestng off all however, is a song composed by George Wilson showing how hard the Veterans were finding it after the war to make ends meet. It is an emotive piece of social history that gives a side to war that is often as neglected as the Veterans were themselves. Many of them finding it very difficult to find employment to support themselves and their families. It is the original composition and includes the lyrics written out on lined paper and then the musical composition.
Eleven years ago
We met the foe
And left dear old England behind;
We did our best
When put to the test
For a cause, all must keep in mind,
But many are seen struggling today
Under conditions, we don't like to say
Refrain
Still, we may be wanted again
And the call will not be in vain
All that we ask
Is for work, any task,
Just for a living, and in England remain
Second Verse
Now years have passed
But our memories last
For those gallant heroes who fell
No hymn of late
Left all to fate
In a land, then desribed living hell
Those that remain, who fought and bled
Should never want for their daily bread
Refrain
Still, we may be wanted again
And the call will not be in vain
All that we ask
Is for work, any task,
Just for a living, and in England, remain
Signed "Composed by George Wilson Eastbourne"
Overall, this is an amazing complete collection of 10th Hussars artefacts relating to George Wilson's Great War service. They come in the original cigar box he kept them in and would provide a rewarding research project for someone willing to undertake such a task. £285.00 Add To Cart |
